The birth ball (simply a large gym/pilates ball) has many uses for an expectant mum.

It can be used during your pregnancy, your labour and even after your baby’s birth.

Using a ball…

Before…
Helps take pressure off hemorrhoids.
Sitting on the ball helps keep the baby well aligned your the pelvis
Ball can be useful for strengthening the lower back if you suffer from chronic back pain.

During…
Encourages pelvic mobility.
Encourages the baby’s descent as you remain sitting and upright to take advantage of gravity.
The ball encourages pelvic relaxation by providing perineal support without undue pressure.
Sitting on a ball and leaning over the bed gives you the pelvic mobility that you are unable to have while sitting on a chair.
May help speed up labour.
Can be used as support while squatting.
Psychologically, balls have the potential to relieve nervous tension – balls bring pleasant memories of childhood play.
If you experience ‘back labour’ (baby is usually in the posterior position) leaning over the ball gives good pelvic mobility as well as using gravity to encourage the heaviest part of your baby’s body to rotate.
Less strain on your wrists and hands when in the hands-and-knees position.
Encourages pelvic rocking and body movement.
Can be used with both internal and external fetal monitoring.
Takes advantage of gravity during and between contractions.
Helps contractions be less painful and more productive.

After…
Great to sit on if you are recovering from an episiotomy or Caesarean
Sit on the ball and sway or bounce if your baby is fussy. The rhythmic movement helps you (and baby) to relax.
