Recently, The Food and Drug Administration of the United States sent a warning letter to Bayer Healthcare related to the problems of Yaz birth control pills. Yaz is a contraceptive drug that contains a combination of hormones estrogen and progestin. It is a popular contraceptive among women to treat premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

FDA concerned on the manufacturing practices for the key ingredients of Yaz. The FDA inspector indicated that the Yaz come from Bayer manufacturing plant in Germany that produces Drospirenone which is the key active ingredient in Yaz contraceptives. Bayer is also fault of measuring the quality of the drug using out-of-specification test results. FDA mentioned that the OOS batches shouldn’t be released for distribution. Furthermore, the FDA also warned Bayer for being overstating the benefits of Yaz in the advertisement and understating the risks of using contraceptive drugs.

No matter what FDA done against the Yaz problems, it is already too late since a lot of women have lost their lives because of taking the Yaz pills. FDA should have done better in regulating the drug so that it won’t harm anyone’s health and life. They should have stricter regulations in protecting the consumers from dangerous drugs. However, it is also our duty as consumer and a part of society to understand the risk of every drug and other type of food we are consuming. We can start it by increasing our awareness on the news released by FDA regarding certain substance content in food, beverage or drugs. Many people failed to realize the danger of certain product they are consuming because of this lack of awareness. You can start it by checking out the FDA news regularly. For further info about the list prescription drugs regulated by FDA, you can check at the FDA website at FDA.gov.
